The number of crimes committed with information technologies (IT) in the first half of 2022 decreased for the first time in five years since 2017. This is indicated by statistics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In the past six months, 249,000 such cases were recorded, 8.2 percent less than a year ago. In addition to the decline in overall statistics, there has also been a decline in illegal acts in all the most common tools and methods used by perpetrators, according to ministry statistics.

This is the first time since 2020 when the Ministry of the Interior began keeping detailed statistics on cybercrime. Until then, only general data on these cases had been reported.

Most importantly, in absolute terms, the number of crimes related to plastic cards decreased during the year: from 89,900 to 61,900 cases. The second place is occupied by crimes committed with the help of mobile communications, which fell from 108,900 to 95,100, or 12.7 percent, while the third place is occupied by crimes committed with the use of computer equipment. Their number dropped by 16.4 percent to 15.6 thousand, down from 18.7 thousand last year, according to the reports.

Major banks that the number of scammers has decreased. The Central Bank reported that telephone scams are still the main way to cheat citizens.

Experts interviewed attributed the positive trend to the population's increased awareness of the crooks' methods, as well as a decrease in the activity of criminals in the spring as part of a special operation. However, according to experts, this trend is unlikely to continue in the future.
