App permission lists to disappear from Google Play Store

App permission lists to disappear from Google Play Store

In April 2022, Google launched a new section of the Google Play Store called Data Security. On July 20, app developers were required to publish information about whether their apps collect data and share it with third parties, as well as the security of their products.

Now that July 20 is only a few days away, media reports have noted that the familiar App Permissions section has disappeared from the app store. So it looks like we will have to rely on the section on data security and what the developers have written there.

Reporters point out that, at first glance, the data security content looks very similar to the old list of permissions. However, the difference lies in the way the authorization information enters Google's system. In this way, the old authorization list was guaranteed to be fact-based, as it was created by Google itself, based on the results of automatic app scans. The new system, on the other hand, is essentially based on trust.

That said, in describing data security, Google notes that if it becomes aware of a discrepancy between an app's behavior and the developer's stated permissions, Google "may take appropriate action, including enforcement action."

Media and researchers argue that it is very difficult to believe that Google will actually detect "inconsistencies" in time and respond quickly. Just look at the number of malware detected each month in the Google Play Store.
